Carolina Chocolate DropsWEDNESDAY
The Carolina Chocolate Drops were exciting when they came out a few years ago with an electrifying genre-blending style and they remain so exciting that we’re more than willing to go anywhere in the region for their shows—which are often not in the District proper. This outing with Bombadil, for instance, will be at the Birchmere. $25, 7:30 p.m.
THURSDAY
Hearing the name “Thurston Moore” is usually a guarantee of excellent music, but we haven’t seen anything like what he’s created with his new band, Chelsea Light Moving, in a long time. There are a few distinctive guitar lines, but then it all goes into a more punk rock/sludge metal route—and it’s mind-blowingly good. Marco Fusinato opens the show at the Black Cat. $15 in advance/$17 day of show, 8:00 p.m.
>> Patriot Center: Green Day, Best Coast. $65, 6:00 p.m.
>> CD Cellar: The Plums, Foul Swoops. Donations, 9:00 p.m.
>> Fillmore: Los Amigos Invisibles. $22, 8:00 p.m.
FRIDAY
We’ve actually seen one of the McDonald brothers (Steven) come through town with OFF! but now the band for which he made a name for himself with brother Jeff, Redd Kross, will be coming to the Black Cat. They’ve been pioneering punk by mixing in other genres for years and if their latest album is any indication, they’re still a worthwhile ticket. The awesomely named Tough Shits open. $15, 9:00 p.m.
>> Comet Ping Pong: Sea Lions, Golden Grrls, Lorelei. $10, 10:00 p.m.
>> 9:30 Club: Local Natives, Superhumanoids. First of two nights. Both Sold Out. 8:00 p.m.
SATURDAY
The Black Angels‘ eerie psychedelic sounds and creepy harmonies will take the Black Cat right down the rabbit hole. We’re additionally excited to see opener Allah-Lahs, who didn’t impress us but so much at SXSW, but now we can’t get those songs out of our heads, so we’ll willingly watch again. Elephant Stone also opens. $20, 9:00 p.m.
>> Red Onion: Alex Bleeker & The Freaks. Free. 5:00 p.m.
SUNDAY
It’s a rare treat seeing to see Soccer Team, the duo of Melissa Quinley and Ryan Nelson. They have a minimalist aesthetic that’s still very powerful and effective and they’ll be at Comet Ping Pong tonight with Papier Tigre and Dubpixel with Rona Bell. $10, 9:00 p.m.
>> Howard Theatre: Bell Biv Devoe. $37.50 in advance/$42 day of show, 8:00 p.m.
>> 9:30 Club: Frightened Rabbit, Wintersleep. Sold Out, 7:00 p.m.
