Photo by M.V. JantzenIt’s official—we’re within a year from the 2014 D.C. primary, which the D.C. Board of Elections has set for April 1. But even though a number of contenders are already exploring or have fully jumped into the race, Mayor Vince Gray said today that he’s in no rush to decide on his own future.
“I have not made a decision whether I will run again,” he told NewsTalk’s Bruce DePuyt this morning. That didn’t stop Gray from rattling off the usual list of accomplishments he ties to his tenure—57 cranes in the sky! Bond ratings that are the envy of other cities! A replenished rainy day fund!—much less directly challenging Councilmember Muriel Bowser (D-Ward 4), a declared mayoral contender who has premised her run on the need for more agency from the mayor’s suite.
“Who has more energy than me? I work 16 hours a day,” he said. “If she wants to talk about energy, I’d be happy to talk about that.” Gray also addressed the ongoing investigation into his 2010 mayoral (shadow) campaign, saying: “I didn’t do anything. I don’t know what else to say.”
Councilmember Tommy Wells (D-Ward 6) is still exploring whether to launch a formal run, and Councilmember Jack Evans (D-Ward 2) has said that he’ll be a candidate.
