Obama administration supporters who love food and foodies who love the Obama administration have something of a matinee idol in Sam Kass, a White House assistant chef who frequently pops up in Michelle Obama’s childhood wellness initiatives. Sometimes, for instance, Kass and the first lady team up to tell parents they should be serving their kids smaller portions of desserts and other empty-calorie foods.

But now, America wil have to make due with a smaller portion of Kass himself. With federal budget sequestration taking a slice off across all non-essential government programs, the White House kitchen is no exception, and Kass will soon be taking some furlough days. The Associated Press reports:

Assistant chef Sam Kass, who cooks dinner for President Barack Obama several nights a week, said Tuesday that he will be furloughed as part of across-the-board budget cuts that went into effect in March. Kass, who is the president’s senior nutrition policy adviser, made the comments in an interview with food reporters at the White House.
