Jayson Werth as King Beyond the Wall. (Original photo HBO/Helen Sloan)Even though Washington Nationals continue to play a-Ha’s “Take on Me,” during games, many fans will forever associate that Scandinavian synth-pop classic with Michael Morse, who now plays for the Seattle Mariners.
But the young season might already contain an even better walk-up music selection, and one that makes perfect sense for the player using the track: Jayson Werth now approaches the plate to the theme music from the HBO series Game of Thrones. The video below was taken at last night’s game, and while the din of the stadium washes it out somewhat, the steady rumble that announces the latest turn in the War of the Five Kings is clearly audible. It’s really a perfect choice for the grizzled, nonchalant, and sometimes cryptic right fielder. Werth is mysterious guy with fearsome power—in his case an $19-million-a-year ability to get on base and drive in runs. He’s kind of like the Mance Rayder of Major League Baseball.
Earlier this week, the Nationals used their fourth-inning Racing Presidents to promote another HBO series, the political satire Veep, which begins its second season on Sunday. We said it then and we’ll say it again here: A Game of Thrones-themed race would be way better.
