Shannon in ‘Boardwalk Empire’ (HBO/Macall B. Polay)

The enraged and incredibly vulgar email that leaked out last week from a ticked off member of a University of Maryland sorority was so rich in nasty zingers it was just begging for a dramatic reading. And behold, the Internet has delivered.

Michael Shannon, who plays the former federal agent Nelson Van Alden on the HBO series Boardwalk Empire, stars in a video released today by Funny or Die in which he gives a reading of a Delta Gamma sister’s shocking takedown of her fellow sorority members for their alleged reluctance to participate in Greek Week events.

In the email, which the author warned her sisters would be a “rough fucking ride,” she complained of receiving “texts on texts about people LITERALLY being so fucking AWKWARD and so fucking BORING.”

Also that in the annual festival of sororities and fraternities being paired up, the sisters of Delta Gamma were accused of being less than enthusiastic about interacting with the brothers of Sigma Nu. In fact, some sisters were even spotted cheering for rival fraternities in Sigma Nu’s athletic competitions, which led the writer to threaten to “cunt punt the next person I hear about doing something like that.”

The letter, which was first published on Deadspin, was an easy viral hit, and badly needed to be put to stage or screen. And Shannon, with his malleable face and bulgy eyes seems just the actor to do it. Van Alden, his character on Boardwalk Empire, begins the series as a mild-mannered Prohibition enforcer, but one with a violent streak that quickly unravels his life into one on the lam. Oh, and then there was that whole business with the steam-powered iron last season.

Shannon’s reading of the letter is slightly abridged, but uncensored. So put in some headphones and enjoy. Because it’s going to be a hilariously rough fucking ride.
