FRIDAY
STORYTELLING: Can you keep a secret? Story League’s storytellers can’t, or at least refuse to about their personal lives. Story League All-Stars: Shocking Confessions fills the Black Cat (1811 14th Street NW) with dark, dirty secrets tonight. Participants are promising to “give up their darkest secrets live onstage!” 9 p.m. $15.
BEER FOR THE TREES: Today is Arbor Day, so what better way to be a friend of the forests than knocking one back for our dendritic friends. All three Pizzeria Paradiso locations (Dupont Circle, Georgetown, Alexandria) are celebrating the trees by committing their tap lines to wood- and barrel-aged draughts. Ten percent of the weekend’s beer sales will be donated to Casey Trees.
MUSIC: As The Sweater Set, Maureen Andary and Sara Curtin wear vintage clothing, play ukulele, guitar, flute, glockenspiel, and accordion—their performances bursting with quirky charm and intricate soprano harmonies. The duo returns to its regular haunt at Strathmore (5301 Tuckerman Lane, North Bethesda) for the release of its new album, Oh Visitor. Begins 8 p.m., tickets $15.
BASEBALL: After trouncing the visiting Cincinnati Reds last night, the Washington Nationals clawed back to a .500 record. See if they can get back to a winning trend this weekend as they complete their four-game series against the Reds. Jordan Zimmermann gets the start for the Nats tonight. At Nationals Park (1500 South Capitol Street SE). Game begins 7:05 p.m.; tickets vary.
SATURDAY:
BLUEGRASS: The fourth annual Kingman Island Bluegrass and Folk Festival takes place all day on one of the last natural preserves in the District of Columbia. Seven bands, dozens of food trucks, and lots of refreshments will be on hand for people who want to spend this weekend doing something good for the locals. Begins 1 p.m. Read more about the festival.
TALK SHOW: Brandon Wetherbee takes his talk show and podcast You, Me, Them, Everybody from the cozy confines of Wonderland Ballroom to the big auditorium of the Artisphere’s Dome Theater with an expanded show featuring interviews, music, comedians, and even some use of the theater’s massive curved screen. Among the guests are The Nation’s Dave Zirin, burlesque dancers, and a series of videos and short films. Begins 8 p.m. Tickets $10.
TWIN PEAKS: Qualia Coffee and Whisked! Bakery are joining forces for a Twin Peaks Brunch at the Blaguard (2003 18th Street NW). Watch episodes of Twin Peaks while you dine on sweet and savory pies and coffee. Dress up as a character from Twin Peaks to get discounts. Begins 10 a.m.
MARGARITAS: Celebrate Cinco De Mayo a little early this weekend at the D.C. Margarita March, a bar crawl through U Street, 14th Street, and Logan Circle. Noon to 10 p.m. Tickets $50, which includes eight margaritas, drink and food specials, and a charity donation.
SUNDAY
MUSIC: Like many other bands out of Charm City, The Snails, a five-piece band, do the ear-pleasing, lo-fi thing. But this Baltimore group, which bills its genre as “Teletubby reggae-pop” (whatever), is actually a release mechanism for members of Future Islands and Lower Dens. They play the Black Cat Backstage (1811 14th Street NW), along with The Art Department and The Lollipops. Begins 8 p.m., tickets $10.
