A Northern Virginia cab driver says he was verbally and then physically attacked last Friday by a passenger who spouted off anti-Muslim slurs and expressed anger over last month’s bombings at the Boston Marathon. The driver, Mohamed A. Salim, tells The Washington Post the passenger accused him of being a terrorist, then proceeded to fracture his jaw.

Salim, who is Muslim, is a member of the U.S. Army Reserve who served in Iraq. Police arrested Clifton, Va. resident Ed Dahlberg on charges of misdemeanor assault.

Before the attack, the Post reports, Salim’s customer allegedly went on an long tirade, which the cab driver videotaped. However, any references to the Boston Marathon or exchanged blows are not on the tape:

On the video, a middle-aged businessman can be heard asking Salim if he is Islamic and then asserting that most Muslims are terrorists. He says the Koran directs Muslims to kill nonbelievers and then repeatedly and loudly demands that Salim denounce the Sept. 11, 2001, attackers. When Salim asks if the passenger is threatening him, the passenger uses an obscene phrase to respond in the affirmative.

“If you’re a Muslim, you’re a [expletive] jihadist,” the passenger says. “You are just as bad as the rest of them.”

The video ends with a blur of motion and audio of Salim asking, “Why are you punching me? Sir, why are you punching me?”

The Council on American-Islamic Relations is asking Fairfax County officials to prosecute the assault as a hate crime. If it is determined that Dahlberg attacked Salim because of the cabbie’s religion, the charge against Dahlberg would become a felony.
