Federal employees who work at the U.S. Labor Department’s headquarters at 200 Constitution Avenue NW are being told to stay home today following a fire there last night. The fire, causes of which are still unknown, broke out on the fourth floor of the Frances Perkins Building, which sits atop an Interstate 395 underpass.
As a result of the fire, Labor Department employees who were scheduled to show up to work today are being given administrative leave, while those scheduled for telework are still on duty. Emergency electrical work to repair damage caused by the fire means that power will be shut off in one-half of the building, which will affect email and BlackBerry services, according to a Labor Department advisory.
The fire and building closure, however, did not affect the release of the monthly unemployment report. The United States added 165,000 jobs in April, with the jobless rate at 7.5 percent.
