Telekinesis is the project of the drummer and songwriter Michael Benjamin Lerner. Through three records, Lerner has expanded his sound and mastered the art of making tracks that are relatable and pull at the heartstrings. As Telekinesis, Lerner has put out three records on Merge; the newest, Dormarion, was released last month. Like the previous two, it is a tightly packed collection of power-pop, but this time around Lerner worked with Spoon’s Jim Eno, who brought some changes to Telekinesis’ sound. This is most evident in the first single from the record, the sparse and moody “Ghosts and Creatures.” The track is aided by atmospheric electronic elements and a pulsing drumbeat, but true to the Telekinesis way, the chorus is catchy and inescapable.
Telekinesis plays tonight with Deep Sea Diver at the Black Cat. The show is sold out.
