A pair of Andean bear cubs born last December made their public debut at the National Zoo today, along with the announcement of their names. The cubs, named Nicole and Curt, were born Dec. 12 to Billie Jean, the zoo’s six-year-old resident Andean bear. (The cubs’ father, Nikki, was euthanized last August after a losing bout with cancer.)
The cubs’ birth was significant because of the species’ endangered status. The National Zoo is one of only two parks in the United States to feature Andean bears; furthermore, these young cubs are only the third litter to be born at a North American zoological facility in the past six years, the zoo stated in a press release.
Nicole, the female cub, is named after Nikki, while Curt gets his name for Curtin Winsor III, a founder of the Bank of Georgetown and a major donor to the zoo, who died Dec. 11.
