Columbus, Ohio has been a sweet spot for scuzzy bands like Times New Viking and Psychedelic Horseshit, but those bands never broke the mainstream, or had any intentions of doing so. However, one of biggest surprises from Columbus has been the electro-rap duo Twenty One Pilots. The band’s use of social media helped propel them to stardom in their home city, where they eventually sold out a huge pavilion and got signed to Fueled By Ramen. Their debut album released earlier this year has been a slow mover, but by the end of the summer I’m sure Twenty One Pilots will become a pretty big player. The band plays at the Sweetlife Festival this Saturday and it is one of the first chances this area will get to their memorable live shows. “Car Radio” is the band’s third single from the record, and it is a slower more introspective track until the synths kick in and it becomes an all out banger towards the end. The rapping is a little whack, but hey the kids love it don’t they?
Twenty One Pilots perform at the Sweetlife Festival on Saturday. Tickets $95.
