A new survey from AAA and Transurban-Fluor reports that 28 percent of “drivers who frequently travel through the 95 Express Lanes construction zone” in Virginia admit to either writing or reading texts. Twenty-four percent of those surveyed say they talk on their phone without a hands-free device while driving, while 20 percent of drivers who use their phones say they’ve almost been in an accident.
The survey, titled “Orange Cones, No Phones,” is meant to raise awareness about the ongoing construction project. The express lanes will run from the Edsall Road area in Fairfax County to Garrisonville Road in Stafford County.
Virginia has banned texting while driving. The legislature passed a law this year upping the fine for the illegal act from $20 to $125. But as The Washington Post reported last month, drivers can escape the fine by telling police they are using their phones as GPS navigation devices.
Shockingly, distracted driving has consequences. Eight out of 10 crashes are caused by distracted drivers, according to the report.
