The cyclist struck earlier this morning in a collision at 11th and U streets NW is in critical condition, the D.C. Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services tells DCist. The cyclist, an adult male whose identity has not yet been released, was struck about 10 a.m. and taken to Howard University Hospital, Lon Walls, a department spokesman said. Walls said the victim was unconscious and suffering from life-threatening injuries when he was transported to the hospital. Walls could not confirm reports elsewhere that the cyclist has died.
Police said the driver involved in the collision stayed on the scene, which prompted the closure of several blocks of U and 11th streets for the rest of the morning.
Another cyclist was struck this morning a few blocks away at the intersection of 16th and W streets NW, police said. In that incident, the victim, an adult female, was taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries.
