Courtesy Washington Humane Society. If price is putting a barrier between you and a pet, the New York Avenue Adoption Center has a solution.
On Saturday, the shelter will hold a one-day event at which adopters can name their own fee. D.C. residents who want to adopt a dog will have to pay an additional $15 for a license fee. Adopting a cat would usually runs $85, while taking home a dog usually costs $170.
The animals will be “vaccinated, micro-chipped and spayed or neutered,” according to the Washington Humane Society.
As an added incentive, the event—titled “Sliding Into Home”—will also feature giveaways of inanimate prizes and two food trucks.
Dogs and cats available for adoption can be seen here and here.
If this sounds like the perfect way to bring a pet into your home so you can film them sitting on a Roomba or playing the piano while howling the blues, here are four things the Humane Society says you’ll need to bring to the event:
- A photo ID
- Proof of current residence: ID, lease, or utility bill (we may ask for landlord contact information to verify pets are allowed on the property)
- Your veterinarian’s contact information (if you currently have pets)
- Any household members who should meet the pet (children, roommates, etc.
