The cyclist who was struck by a car last Thursday morning near the intersection of 11th and U streets NW died of his injuries, the Metropolitan Police Department said Saturday.

Andre Brands, 50, was traveling south on 11th Street about 10:05 a.m. when he entered the intersection with U Street. Brands was struck by a Nissan Altima traveling eastbound in the center lane; he was taken to nearby Howard University Hospital where he later died from injuries suffered in the crash

Although Brands’ death was not announced until Saturday, there were differing reports on Thursday afternoon as to whether he had died from the collision. Brands was not wearing a helmet during his ride on Thursday, police said.

The driver of the Nissan was not injured in the collision, police said. The incident remains under investigation.
