“Give me your dog. Yorkies cost a lot of money.”

That’s what prosecutors say was uttered by Christopher Young when he robbed a D.C. woman of her pet dog in January. Young, 18, was sentenced to four years in prison on an armed robbery charge stemming from a Jan. 5 incident in which he stole his victim’s pet Yorkshire Terrier at gunpoint.

On the morning of Jan. 5, prosecutors say, Young approached his victim, who was walking her dog near the intersection of Fifth and Kennedy streets NE. Young then revealed a handgun and uttered his now-memorable statement before snatching the little pooch and running toward Chillum Place NE.

The dog-snatching didn’t last long, though. During his escape, Young dropped his cell phone, which allowed police to determine that he was wearing a GPS-enabled ankle bracelet at the time of the robbery. And along with the phone, officers also found the dog’s leash; the Yorkie itself escaped Young and made its way home.

But Young wasn’t wrong. Yorkies don’t come cheap. Miracle Yorkies, a Raleigh, N.C. dog dealer specializing in the breed, charges between $800 and $2,500 for males and between $1,200 and $3,000 for females. (Warning: Link leads to Comic Sans.)
