Bozie arrives at the National Zoo.

The wait is over! Bozie, the 37-year-old Asian elephant who is also an accomplished artist, arrived at the National Zoo on Wednesday.

Bozie’s journey to the National Zoo began after her companion at the Baton Rouge Zoo died in March. She then made the over 1,000 mile trip to Washington to begin her new life with the National Zoo’s three elephants.

According to a press release, Bozie will spend the next 30 days in quarantine before joining Ambika, Shanthi and Shanthi’s 11-year-old son, Kandula. Bozie and Shanthi are actually already acquainted, having spent time together at the Elephant Orphanage Department of Wildlife Conservation in Sri Lanka as calves.

The introduction process will begin slowly, according to the release, as “they become familiar with one another’s smell, looks and temperament.” “By watching their behavioral cues, we’ll be able to determine their comfort level and can move as quickly or slowly as they see fit,” elephant manager Marie Galloway said in the release. “Our goal is for Bozie, Shanthi, and Ambika to bond and live together as a herd.”

The National Zoo spent $56 million creating the Elephant Trails exhibit, which includes an Elephant Community Center and spans 8,943 square meters. There’s also room to grow, as the facility can house eight to ten adult elephants.
