The cost of hailing a cab in D.C. is going up by a little bit today, but not for all taxis all at once. The minimum fare is increasing from $3 to $3.25, but the new rate only applies to vehicles that have installed credit card readers.

Under regulations the D.C. Taxicab Commission issued earlier this month, all 7,300 of the city’s taxicabs must install credit card readers by Sept. 1, though some cab companies are trying to beat that deadline. In addition to the new base rate, though, there is also an additional 25-cent surcharge that will go back to the DCTC to pay for its oversight of the new credit card payment systems.

A few other changes to the taxi fare schedule also go into effect. Taxis will now charge $1 for up to three additional passengers, rather than separate fees for each rider after the first. Luggage fees are gone, too.
