Washington’s actors have the opportunity to audition at a variety of venues for plays written by both famous and local playwrights. But the Prisons Foundation is offering thespians the opportunity to do something a little different: Perform in a play written by someone who’s currently in prison.

Auditions for the eighth “From Prison to the Stage” event will be held this weekend. Performances of the prisoner-written plays will be held Labor Day weekend at the Kennedy Center.

Plays are picked by the Prisons Foundation’s selection committee. Works currently being considered, including ones titled “The Kids Don’t Stand A Chance” and “Santa Claus is Coming to the Hood,” can be read here.

Because the event is free, performers will not be compensated, according to organizers.

Auditions will held at St. Mary’s Court Housing Development Corporation in Foggy Bottom this Saturday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday from 1 p.m.to 3 p.m. Actors should bring a résumé and headshot. Rehearsals will be held on the weekends.
