Today is National Doughnut Day, like you didn’t already know. That means it’s time to get a free or discounted fried dough treat from America’s national doughnut chains. Some local shops are also participating in their own special way.

  • Krispy Kreme is offering free doughnuts with no strings attached. There’s only one store inside the District, located in Dupont Circle near the Metro station’s south exit. The shop is rather small and it’s raining quite hard this morning, so you’ll be nice and wet for your free doughnut. There’s also a location in Alexandria along Richmond Highway. Make sure to get a hat while you’re there.
  • Purchase a beverage at participating Dunkin’ Donuts location, get a free doughnut. There are many locations in D.C. and the surrounding areas. After finishing your discounted doughnut, you can also try the chain’s new glazed doughnut breakfast sandwich. (Or don’t. Please don’t.)
  • GBD, or Golden Brown Delicious Chicken and Doughnuts, in Dupont is offering customers who come in from 8 to 11 a.m. the chance to win a doughnut breakfast party, which features 24 doughnuts and coffee. There’s at least one DCist editor who will gladly accept an invitation to the winning person’s doughnut celebration.
  • Astro Doughnuts isn’t offering free doughnuts, but they do have a sweet offer. The Metro Center shop is selling a special raspberry-blueberry doughnut with all proceeds going to the Fisher House Foundation, which provides free or low cost housing to veterans and military families receiving treatment at military medical centers.
  • Mobile doughnut purveyor District Doughnut will give away 50 free bags of doughnuts outside the McPherson Square Metro stop. This offer began at 8:30 a.m. Update: They ran out in two minutes.
  • Doissant seller Chocolate Crust in Brightwood doesn’t have any special offers planned today. But it still sells fake cronuts!
