Authorities responded to a report of a suspicious powder found inside a letter at the Jamaican Embassy in Dupont Circle today.
Fire and EMS spokesperson Tim Wilson said one person was exposed, but he wasn’t sure if the person is male or female. A Secret Service spokesman told the Post that the powder was in a suspicious letter.
There was no answer at the Jamaican Embassy. No further information about the powder was available.
According to WNEW’s Kevin Rincon, police have since left the scene. New Hampshire Ave., which was shut down around noon, has been reopened.
Many Twitter users in the busy Dupont Circle neighborhood questioned the police presence and shared details from the scene. One woman shared a photo of two people in hazmat suits standing outside the embassy, located at 1520 New Hampshire Ave. NW.
Update: The Post reports that the substance was “not hazardous.”
