Baltimore’s Wye Oak have been making intricately crafted indie rock since 2006. With three full-length albums under their belt, the duo of Jenn Wasner and Andy Stark could not be criticized for wanting to branch out. Wasner has a couple of projects to keep her busy during Wye Oak’s down time, but her Dungeonesse project is her most fascinating. Unlike the straightforward rock of Wye Oak or Flock of Dimes, Dungenonesse, Wasner’s collaboration with Jon Ehrens of Art Department, is R&B-tinged electro-pop. On its expertly crafted self-titled debut, released in May, the band takes its favorite 90’s pop songs and re-imagines them as party classics. Wasner’s voice is a mixture of 90’s R&B divas evoking Toni Braxton’s lower range while still being able to hit some of Mariah Carey’s higher notes. “Drive You Crazy” is an earworm with an inescapable chorus.
Dungeonesse play with The Stepkids and AM & Shawn Lee at Tuesday 6/18 at U Street Music Hall. Tickets $20.
