What could make an airport traveler’s experience even worse? A highly contagious respiratory infection, of course!

Passengers who traveled through Dulles International Airport earlier this month may have been exposed to Measles. WTOP reports that the “Loudoun County Health Department says anyone who was at the international terminal or baggage claim in the main terminal June 7 between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. could have been exposed to the virus.” An international traveler infected with the disease is to blame for the scare.

Passengers won’t be out of the woods until this Friday, as Measles can present itself 21 days after exposure. Symptoms include a fever, dry cough, runny nose and rash.

Cases of the disease have dramatically dropped in the United States since a vaccine was introduced in 1963. 2011 saw a spike of cases, with 222 reports in the U.S. that year. As USA Today reported, most of the cases were “imported — either by foreign visitors or by U.S. residents who picked up the virus overseas.” That number decreased to 54 in 2012, a more typical number, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
