Here’s your daily dose of “d’awwww”: Hank, the Smithsonian National Zoo’s new sloth bear cub, made his public debut Wednesday.
The cub was born on Dec. 19, 2012, but has spent the past six months in a closed-off den near the Asia Trail exhibit with his mother, Hana. According to animal keeper Mindy Babitz, “only 18 zoos in the U.S. exhibit this species, so visitors are in for a rare and special treat watching him grow up.”
Animal care staff have spent the last few months training Hank to become familiar with many climbing structures and varied terrain of the bear sloth’s exhibit. Now that they feel he’s ready, Hank will be out and about conquering the various climbing obstacles, presumably in an adorable fashion, on the Asia Trail daily from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Or, you can keep tabs on Hank and his endearingly cute happenings via the live Sloth Bear Cub Cam on the Zoo’s website. (He previously fought a cardboard box, which ended in a draw.)
