Today’s the big day for downtown D.C. denizens, in that after reading this bit of news, people might want to go out and buy bigger pants. The newest outpost of Shake Shack, Danny Meyer’s growing chain of hamburger and ice cream joints, opens at 11 a.m. at the corner of Ninth and F streets NW.
The new Shake Shack, located on the ground floor of the International Spy Museum in the space previously inhabited by the museum’s anemic Spy Café, is the company’s second full-time location in D.C. after the Dupont Circle location that opened in May 2011. (There is another location at Nationals Park.)
This location, however, is nestled in a sea of office buildings, full of workers who are sure to see their productivity drop as they salivate over Shack Burgers, crinkle fries, milkshakes, and other desserts. In particular, we’re looking forward to The New Republic shifting away from high-minded takedowns of popular culture and global leaders and toward petty sniping against Five Guys as the magazine’s staffers latch on to their their new lunch spot.
And like all other Shake Shacks, this one features a few concretes—frozen custards blended with various toppings—specific to the location. By far, the most ostentatious of the confections is one called “Doughnuts Are Forever,” which was sampled at an opening party last night.
The dessert mixes Shake Shack’s standard vanilla custard with rainbow sprinkles, raspberry jam, and chunks of coconut-crusted doughnuts baked by nearby Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken. And yes, it is as satisfying as it is ridiculous.
