D.C. might be the home of Dischord, but the recent crop of new bands in the area are trying to change the dialogue. Sure, all these bands grew up on Fugazi, but they are no longer trying to imitate Fugazi, or any of Ian MacKaye’s other bands. D.C.’s Wild Fruit have some of the energy from the 90’s D.C. heyday, but that’s where it all ends. While a garage rock band at heart, Wild Fruit can also sound like the missing link between the Cramps and Big Black, or a mash-up of Sonic Youth and Beat Happening. Tonight, the band plays Black Cat in support of a new seven-inch single released today on Boisterous Mirth Records. The A-side, “Barn Burner,” is a scuzzy rodeo with some of the most angular guitars you will hear all year.

Wild Fruit plays tonight with Night Streets at the Black Cat . Tickets $10.
