A faculty member from the University of the District of Columbia has embarked on a solo bike journey from D.C. to Portland, Ore. to raise money for a climate change organization.

Josh Lasky, who serves as UDC’s assistant director for sustainability education, began the trip this morning at the Capitol Reflecting Pool and expects to complete the ride this September, according to the AP. He will make the 4,000 mile trip by riding 60 to 70 miles a day.

Lasky is a board member at Climate Ride, a bike advocacy and sustainability nonprofit. Through the trip, Lasky’s attempting to raise $5,000 for the group, which leads bike rides from D.C. to New York City and through California. Thus far, he’s raised just over $1,000.

On the fundraising site, Lasky said he’s “motivated by the need for immediate action, a sense of urgency, and a new ethic of embracing change.”

His journey can be tracked on his blog here.
