As Georgetown Patch first reported, D.C. Schools Chancellor Kaya Henderson said in a letter this week that, due to “positive changes in our budget outlook,” funding for the center will be restored to last year’s level. This means that four full-time positions will not have to be eliminated, as was previously thought.
“Like you, I believe strongly in the importance of art and music, and this restored funding will allow the program to continue to serve students at the level we’ve come to expect from the Fillmore Arts program … while we work together to determine how to best support the Fillmore program as more and more schools hire art and music teachers at their home schools,” Henderson said in a rather ominous way, as group Friends of Fillmore noted in a blog post.
Over 1,000 people signed a petition started by the Friends of Fillmore to restore $300,000 to the center’s budget. The group said if cuts proposed in the D.C. Public Schools budget went through, it would leave the center “with no hope of viability.” Friends of Fillmore said in a statement to Patch they are “thrilled” by the latest funding development.
The Fillmore Arts Center provides students from eight D.C. public schools with arts education. This includes dance, theater and music classes The center has two locations, one at 1819 35th Street NW and the other at 915 Spring Road NW.
