Chance the Rapper, the 20 year-old MC from Chicago, has been on the rise the past two years. His first mixtape, #10Day was released while he was on a 10-day suspension from school and garnered the young rapper a lot of praise for his rapid-fire style and gravely voice.
After some high-profile guests spots, and a mention on XXL’s Freshmen Class list, Chance released the free mixtape Acid Rap this past April, and it is his best yet. Chance’s voice can be a bit grating at times coming across like a mix of Lil’ Wayne and Kendrick Lamar with some helium, but his uniqueness makes him standout. Chance is currently on tour with Mac Miller, with a stop Wednesday at the Fillmore Silver Spring, and while Miller is headlining the packed gig, Chance is sure to steal the show.
“Good Ass Intro”, the first track from Acid Rap, is a refreshing blast of R&B vocals and jazzy horns mixed with Chicago Footwork. Chance raps like he is running a marathon, so it is a relief when he takes a breath.
Chance the Rapper plays Wednesday night with Mac Miller, The Internet, Vince Staples, The Come Up and Choo Jackson. Tickets are sold out.
