Belle and Sebastian have been making music for mixtapes since 1996. Their eighth record Write About Love may have been released three years ago, but that doesn’t stop the band from touring every now and then. While Belle and Sebastian is known for their quality albums, the band’s treasure trove of EPs and singles are equally as good. Sometimes even better.
Push Barman to Open Old Wounds collected their singles from 1997 to 2001 and this year Belle and Sebatian are releasing The Third Eye Center, featuring singles from 2003 to 2010. Coming off two bombs – Fold Your Hands Child… and Storytelling – 2003’s Dear Catastrophe Waitress was a revelation.
Those sessions’s leftovers included one of their quintessential songs, “Your Cover’s Blown.” Included on Center as a remix, the Abba inspired track is the sexiest song the band have ever written. The catchy track is a tale of cheating and deception, and Miaoux Miaoux‘s remix stays true to the original’s disco underpinnings, while elevating parts with a bit of electro flair.
Belle and Sebastian play tonight with Yo La Tengo at Merriweather Post Pavillion. Tickets are $35-45.
