Hudson Mohawke has not released a proper album since 2009’s Butter, but the producer and DJ has kept busy as his star has risen. His project TNGHT with fellow producer Lunice caused a frenzy last year. Enough to catch the attention of Kanye West, who signed Mohawke to a production deal with G.O.O.D. Music and featured him on this year’s Yeezus. Mohawke typically produces trap and R&B genres, but he has been known to blend styles from across the board.
Back in 2011, Hud Mo released a rare vinyl titled Pleasure Principle featuring remixes of well known R&B tracks. He released the title track “Pleasure,” a reworking of Janet Jackson’s “The Pleasure Principle,” as a free download this past March. The track takes Jackson’s giddy vocals, and pairs them with tropical beats and a moombathon tempo.
Hudon Mohawke plays tonight with Joe Shabadu and Willy Joy at the U Street Music Hall. Tickets are $20.
