Some federally-contracted workers at Union Station walked off the job this morning to protest low wages, one week after Smithsonian vendor employees did the same.
The protest was organized once again by Good Jobs Nation, who held a similar demonstration at the train station in March. Workers, who staff some of the station’s food vendors and stores, are asking President Obama to guarantee a “living wage and a voice on the job” through an executive order.
Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.) spoke at the protest outside Union Station, telling the employees, “What you are doing today is exposing the collusion between the federal government and low wages, here and across America.”
Protestors then gathered inside the station, carrying signs that read “Dear Mr. President: Every Worker Needs A Living Wage” and “Dear Mr. President: Support American Families.”

They also chanted, “We can’t survive on 8.25,” which is the minimum wage in the District of Columbia. As DCist previously noted, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s urban planning department’s “living wage calculator” places the living wage for one adult in D.C. at $13.68 per hour.
