The Continuing Adventures of John Blade, Super Spy begins as you expect a spy thriller to: With a suave man of mystery and a nearly nude woman fawning over him.
But the ultra-comedy, where nearly every line was a joke, quickly launched into over-the-top sexual humor and extreme camp. From the first minute, it’s clear the play will either connect with you, or it won’t. For most of the audience is the former, as the belly laughs proved. But for this critic it was the latter, although I admired how many clever lines Kyle Encina managed to pack into his script. This included a fun back-and-forth about whether Harry Potter is actually that great of a guy.
John Blade begins as many spy shows do — with the hero facing a villain’s henchman — then takes an unexpected twist, turning the focus on a guard named Jeff who becomes a hero to the evil Dr. Professor Tantamount. Actor Christian Sullivan does his best with the leading role, but regularly rushed through Encina’s stuffed dialogue. Lex Davis stood out as Jeff’s best friend Troy, a bombastic IT guy who provided some of the biggest laughs.
Most admirable was the impressive stage combat that all characters took part in, which is the specialty of the new company Live Action Theatre. Shootouts, sword fights and an excellent scene involving a blow dart: The action is where it’s at in John Blade.
