With Eat Local First happening this week, there is no shortage of venues to not only eat locally produced foods but support local businesses from farm to your mouth. And in that spirit, a few bars around the city are supporting not just local foods, but local breweries that sustain our thirst for quality beer made by our neighbors.
All Pizza Paradiso locations are celebrating with a pie called the Locavore, made with local heirloom tomato sauce, corn, carrots, green beans, cubanelle peppers, garlic, and buffalo mozzarella. When you order this pizza, two local beers are half price. On Thursday, the Georgetown location will be serving the first beer from Right Proper Brewing Company. “Brimstone and Clover” is a saison brewed with wildflower honey, mugwort, yarrow, heather, calendula, and beechwood-smoked malt that gives it a delicate finish that pairs well with D.C.’s summer heat.
Right Proper, which is opening a brewpub this fall in Sahw, is a collaboration between Thor Cheston, the former beer director at Brasserie Beck, and Nathan Zeender, a well-respected homebrewer and owner of Wild Craft Soda.
Meridian Pint, Columbia Height’s premier beer destination is creating a whole week of local beer events celebrating the Mid-Atlantic region’s diverse beer and food offerings. While each day has a specific themed or ticketed event, all draft beer poured at Meridian Pint and the Finale Party will be local and it will all be $5 a pour all day and night.
Monday: all-you-can eat blue crabs and Maryland brewers’ night.
Tuesday: Celebrate the Commonwealth, featuring beer, cheese, and raw oysters from Virginia.
Wednesday: The District edition, including 24 drafts of local beer and draft cocktails
Thursday: Foraged cask night, featuring local casks and dishes with locally foraged ingredients.
Friday: Respect Your Brewpub Night features regional brewpubs including Brewer’s Alley, Brewer’s Art, Devils Backbone, Franklin’s, Mad Fox, and Oliver Ales.
Saturday: The Farm-To-Street Party at Union Market features 20 local breweries serving drafts for $5 all day.
With so many options, it is easy to support local breweries and have a great time doing it. Also, keep your eyes open as information about DC Beer Week will be rolling out soon.
