Smith Westerns have grown up considerably since their start in 2007. Their 2009 self-titled debut was a scrappy collection of power-pop and glam that had potential, but their sophomore record, 2010’s Dye It Blonde, is a higher watermark. The band’s songs tackle relatable topics like relationships, but mostly from a high-school perspective.

While this was novel at first—the members were in their teens when they formed the group —there comes a time when every band has to mature. Smith Westerns, a trio from Chicago, released their third album, Soft Will, last month, marking a new mature, but still awkward phase. But the band’s love affair with glam rock is hardly subdued, especially on the album’s stellar closing track “Varsity”.

Smith Westerns play tonight with Wampire at the Black Cat. Tickets are $15-18.
