Paul Weller at the 9:30 Club.

It’s fair to say The Modfather tours the United States rather infrequently. Since his last D.C. show, in 2008, former Jam frontman Paul Weller has released two new studio albums (2010’s raucous Wake Up The Nation and last year’s gloriously loopy Sonik Kicks) plus a mammoth Live at the BBC box set. All this material and more was on display Tuesday night at the 9:30 Club as Weller ran through a 20-plus-song setlist featuring his songs from his entire career.

He opened with a strutting version of “Peacock Suit” and proceeded to play selections from seven different solo albums, including crowd sing-along fave “Above The Clouds” and an especially swampy version of “Porcelain Gods.” The Jam were represented by set-list must haves like “That’s Entertainment” and the evening closing “Town Called Malice,” while a breezy rendition of “My Ever Changing Moods” reminded the crowd of one of The Style Council’s high marks.

Weller was energetic throughout, strutting around the stage, effortlessly ripping of guitar solo after solo and throwing out a leg kick every once in a while to make sure you were paying attention. He turned 55 in May and you’d really never know it. And yes, he still carries a chip on his shoulder for his lack of success in America. Before introducing “Klang I Klang” from Sonik Kicks, he dedicated the song “to the three and a half people that bought this record.”
