An F-16C pilot from the D.C. Air National Guard was rescued in the water off Chincoteague, Va. on Thursday night after a collision with another plane, the U.S. Coast Guard said. The pilot, who has not been identified, sent out a distress signal when he pulled his ejection seat at 10:28 p.m.
The other plane, also an F-16C, was able to fly back to Joint Base Andrews in Maryland. The pilot who ejected into the water was found picked up by a helicopter crew about 12:30 a.m. roughly 35 miles southeast of Chincoteague. The Coast Guard says he is in good condition, while the cause of the collision is under investigation.
The last time a military jet went down in Virginia, the crash scene was much more chaotic, when a Navy F/A-18 smashed through a Virginia Beach apartment complex in April 2012.
