The woman who was struck by a dump truck at the intersection of Fourth Street and Massachusetts Avenue NW in June died last week.

Laura Nicole Rinaldi of Bowie, Md. died July 28, according to an obituary. A funeral for the 38-year-old mother of one took place on Saturday.

As the Mount Vernon Triangle blog noted, Rinaldi was a lawyer who worked for the D.C. Bar Pro Bono Program, which “recruits, trains and mobilizes volunteer attorneys to take pro bono cases serving individuals living in poverty who are at risk of losing their homes, their livelihoods, and their families.”

Monika Kalra Varma, executive director of the program, said Rinaldi “was someone who brought her passion, her incredible knowledge and her loving nature to serve the most impoverished members of our community.”

“She was someone who touched so many lives across the District,” Varma said. “She was just one of the warmest and kindest people you could ever meet.”

So far this year, 239 pedestrians and cyclists have been struck by cars in the District, according to Struck in D.C. This includes the mother of an infant who was struck and killed while crossing Eastern Avenue NE this month.

Days after her death, the Pedestrian and Cyclist Advisory Councils sent a letter to the D.C. Council asking for the traffic camera program to be expanded. “We believe that this program is one important way to protect pedestrians and bicyclists from dangerous driver behaviors, including speeding, running red lights and stop signs, and speeding through intersections,” the letter reads.

“Every pedestrian death is a tragedy,” Jason Broehm, chair of the Pedestrian Advisory Council said of Rinaldi’s death. Broehm said PAC thinks “the city is heading in the right direction,” but there is “still a lot of work to be done.”

Request for comment from the Metropolitan Police Department about whether the driver of the dump truck was charged with a crime has not been returned.
