If you ever wondered what a Pavement and Polvo hybrid would sound like with Liz Phair fronting the band, look no further then Massachusetts band Speedy Ortiz. The college friends got together a couple years ago and rode the hype wagon with their debut EP, but things really started heating up with the release of the debut full length Major Arcana this past July.

Speedy Ortiz belongs in the stable of young indie rock acts whose affection for the sounds of 1991 thorough 1995 are worn like a badge of honor. While aping the sounds of yesteryear might seem like a novelty, Speedy Ortiz is far from a nostalgia act. Major Arcana is a sharp debut that is catchy, gritty and 100 percent of the now. “Plough” is the most Pavement sounding of the tracks on the record – riding a Wowee Zowee vibe – but the lyrics have sharp lines like “I was never the witch that you made me to be/ Still you picked a virgin over me.”

Speedy Ortiz play with Socer Team and Two Inch Astronaut at Comet Ping Pong Sunday night. Tickets are $10.
