While J.J. the bulldog may be the most high-profile dog in D.C. in need of a new home, the Washington Humane Society once again has an abundance of non-famous but still great adoptable pets.
The WHS lays out the issue in a news release:
In July alone, WHS took in 526 cats, 326 dogs, and 22 other domestic animals. At the same time, only 241 adoptions occurred – just 27% of the total intake. WHS currently has over 250 animals who need homes now.
Today through Friday, August 16, adoption fees have been lowered to $25 for cats and $50, plus a $15 license fee, for dogs. Following the positive reaction to their “Catnado” campaign, the WHS has dubbed this promotion “It’s Raining Cats and Dogs.”
In order to help keep owners from surrendering pets to a shelter due to housing issues, the WHS launched the pilot program Pets at Home in April. As of last week, the program had successfully kept ten dogs in their homes or out of a shelter.
Meanwhile, the Washington Animal Rescue League is looking for homes for 12 dogs rescued from an Arkansas hoarder. WARL CEO Bob Raymin told NBC4, “[The dogs] are mostly mixed breed, but they’re all cute and handsome as can be.”
