Con artists in Montgomery County are targeting elderly people with dirty tricks in order to steal their cash.

A 77-year-old man was robbed of $10,000 this week after two thieves convinced him to withdraw the money and let them hold it, according to Montgomery County police.

NBC4 spoke to the victim, who said he was saving the money to help take care of his disabled wife. The victim said one of the scammers, who had a Jamaican accent and appeared to “have a lot of cash,” said he didn’t trust U.S. banks. So the victim drove the criminals to his bank, where he withdrew money to “show banks could be trusted.” The men then took the money, said they were getting a sandwich and never returned.

A 68-year-old woman was also targeted in July, according to police.

The suspects stated that if the victim gave them $1,700.00, the suspects could invest the money and get a return of $400,000.00. The victim withdrew money from the Bank of America (located at 12099 Rockville Pike) and gave the suspects $1,700.00. The suspects walked away and were never seen again.
