While many people have been enjoying the rich shark-themed programming of Discovery Channel’s annual Shark Week takeover, local psychedelic garage-rockers Shark Week (no affiliation to Discover Channel) have been in the midst of a short mid-summer tour.

A tour that’s been going swimmingly up until last night’s show at Cole’s Bar in Chicago, where their van was broken into and robbed.

Shark Week’s drummer Daniel Newhauser tells DCist the story:

“We pulled into the venue we were going to play at in Logan Square, unloaded our gear and left our van sitting out front of the venue—locked and everything—and went to a brewery to have a few beers. When we came back to the van we had noticed that somebody had popped the lock of the side door. I guess it was a quick smash-and-grab job: They stole my bag and [guitarist] Al [Pacheco]’s bag and random stuff that was in there like our GPS, chords, and minor electronic stuff. That was that.”

Luckily, none of their gear—which often times can be worth thousands of dollars (like when Protect-U was robbed in Paris earlier this year)—was taken, but it’s still a bummer for the band. “Probably the most annoying thing that got stolen was my laptop and our passports,” Newhauser says.

Though the robbery only resulted in the loss of mostly superficial items, often times bands turn to Kickstarter to help with the financial strain of getting your shit stolen. But in Shark Week’s case, that’s not really necessary. “I don’t know how I’d feel about starting a Kickstarter to get new underwear,” says Newhauser.

Shark Week has two dates left on their tour, tonight in Louisville, Ky. and tomorrow in Nashville, Tenn. Let’s all send some good vibes their way.
