“Smile, you’re on a bicycle.” This is just one message that has been painted on the 15th Street cycle track by a mystery graffiti-doer to greet passing cyclists.
It’s not clear when the messages appeared (or who painted them), but it seems they were first tweeted about by Puck Buddys earlier this week. They let the D.C. Department of Transportation know about the graffiti, which even DDOT found “kinda cool.”
@PuckBuddys Yeah, I agree. Kinda cool!

While the messages are rather delightful, they aren’t long for the world. As WAMU reports, work on repaving the two-way bike lane will begin in the first week of September and will be completed within four to six weeks.
DDOT spokeswoman Monica Hernandez said the agency will “check into” the graffiti. “The timing associated with our repaving plans may indeed play a factor in our decision making,” she added.
Take some time to enjoy these nice notes, while they last.
Update: Readers also report seeing the messages on R Street NW. Former DCist editor Ben Freed also spotted one on T Street.
Second update: Reader Evan Wilder sends us a photo of a message left on Rhose Island Avenue NW near 14th Street.
