Hearts prepare to be warmed: A D.C.-based pet rescue raised enough money to fit a puppy with a prosthetic paw after he was born without a right front one.
According to a release from Lucky Dog Rescue, four-month-old Evan was born to a rescued border collie mix from a high-kill shelter in South Carolina. While his nine siblings were healthy, he was born without a front right paw.
Instead of opting for an amputation, the group decided to start a fundraiser for so Evan could get a prosthetic paw. Lucky Dog raised over $1,300 through 41 donors for Evan’s new paw and his vet bills within two weeks, according to a release.
Evan, along with many other dogs, is currently up for adoption. The person who adopts Evan will be able to get a discount from the veterinarian Lucky Dog uses when Evan needs a new prosthetic.
“I can’t wait to send Evan home with his new family,” Mirah Horowitz, executive director of Lucky Dog, said in the release. “Evan didn’t let his disability slow him down – he met it head on and he has triumphed. I think we can all learn something from a puppy like Evan. I know I have.”
