Yet another arbitrary study was conducted, resulting in yet another arbitrary list that ranks cities according to arbitrary criteria. Except that this is list is actually kind of cool!
After analyzing several factors including “the number of recreational facilities, acres of parkland as a percentage of city area, number of recreation and senior centers, and number of playgrounds,” NerdWallet—a consumer finance website—came up with what they believe is a list of the best cities in the country for recreational activities. And hey, look, D.C. is number eight.
NerdWallet breaks down their reasoning for D.C.’s ranking:
D.C.’s Department of Parks and Recreation has facilities that meet the needs of every resident: playgrounds, gymnasiums, fitness centers, community gardens, athletic fields, pools, tennis courts and senior service centers. There are urban camping programs for kids and teens, and each year the department holds the Annual DC Senior Games, a 15-event athletic competition for seniors. If your family enjoys the outdoors, they can take part in the Outdoor Explorer Family Adventures and explore the natural areas around the city. The city’s numerous athletic fields support adult basketball, flag football, kickball and softball, while kids can take part in a variety of other sports, as well.
Coming in on the list before D.C. is: Anchorage/Anchorage Borough, Alaska; Baton Rouge, La.; Norfolk, Va.; Cincinnati, Ohio; Saint Paul, Minn.; Madison, Wis. Minneapolis, Minn. took home the number one spot.
Conclusion: This list isn’t all that arbitrary! Go outside and play some kickball or something.
