The New York Avenue bridge in NoMa is about to get a little artier. Two 50-foot “tree-like structures,” designed by Kent Bloomer Studio, are currently being installed on the bridge, which serves as an entry point to D.C.

D.C. Department of Transportation spokeswoman Monica Hernandez said work on the installation began today. One branch on the outbound side of the bridge will be installed this weekend, while the second branch on the inbound side will be put in place next weekend.

The D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities commissioned the project through a competition to “highlight Washington D.C.’s up-and-coming NoMA neighborhood,” according to Bloomer Studio. As the City Paper reported in 2010, the project was expected to cost $500,000.
