The National Zoo remains open after a gas line was struck at the site of construction on North Road.
According to the Associated Press, some staffers smelled gas inside buildings. But it turns out the smell was “coming in through vents to the outside.”
“In an abundance of caution, we had staff stay out of the animal houses closest to where the line break occurred,” Zoo spokeswoman Pamela Baker-Masson said in an email. “Animals and staff are all fine. Washington Gas is on site and checking all lines for us.”
Since the Zoo is open, you should go see Wasabi, the Zoo’s fishing cat kitten born on May 17, who is now on exhibit with his mom, Electra. According to the Zoo, “He’s having a great time exploring his exhibit, and Electra is clearly enjoying having a little one to play with in the yard.”
