The Washington Humane Society says it’s “grateful” for the donation the Obamas made in honor of the arrival of their new pup, Sunny.

“We’re honored that President Obama and his family have once again recognized the Washington Humane Society as the leading voice for animals and are grateful for their generous gift,” Lisa LaFontaine, WHS president and CEO, said in a statement of the undisclosed donation. “We hope others are inspired to add to their family, and see the value in having multiple pets. The companionship of another dog for Bo will certainly benefit him in ways that people can’t emulate.”

In honor of Sunny’s arrival, WHS will offer a 25 percent discount on all adoptions of an additional pet through August.

The Washington Humane Society also used the opportunity to praise the White House for issuing a statement against breed-specific legislation in response to a We the People petition.

As DCIst previously reported, the WHS’s Pets at Home program helped keep a pet pitbull from Prince George’s County – which has banned that breed of dog since 1996 – out of a shelter.

“Science and experience has proven these laws ineffective, and there is no place for discrimination of dogs based on their appearance in an enlightened and compassionate society,” LaFontaine said. “Because WHS celebrates all animals, the generous contribution of the First Family will be used to help find homes for dogs who might otherwise be affected by breed discrimination.”
