Good news for people who need to earn some extra cash or need some extra help. TaskRabbit, the online service that helps people who need things done be matched with people willing to do them, expanded to D.C., as well as four other cities, this week.

Johnny Brackett, head of public relations for the San Francisco-based company, said D.C. was the most requested city for an expansion.

“It really works for both sides of a community,” Brackett said of the errand service. “TaskRabbit thrives in urban communities with a lot of young professionals who are running around trying to supplement their income. As you know, Washington D.C. is a very expensive city.” (Yes we do.)

Brackett also noted that D.C.’s unemployment rate is relatively high (it rose to 8.6 percent in July). “People are really looking for alternative ways to make money,” he added.

But for those of us lucky enough to be employed, Brackett said TaskRabbit can be the “extra help” people need to get everything done.

So far, 600 people have signed up in D.C. to be TaskRabbits, who must go through an application process and background check. While the company doesn’t disclose how many people look for help (there’s no cute name for them), he did say the most common task requested is delivery-based. This includes things like picking up groceries and driving to Ikea to grab a bed.

The second most popular service requested, especially in D.C., is handyman help. Because of that, TaskRabbit is looking to recruit more handymen and women to become, uh, Rabbits, Brackett said. Housecleaning and moving help round out the top four most requested services.

For those looking to take advantage of the service, TaskRabbit is offering a $15 discount when users enter the code “TRDC.” Interested TaskRabbits can sign up here.
