In addition to the National Cathedral, churches across the country will have bells ringing out in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington and Martin Luther King Jr.’s legendary “I Have a Dream” speech.
At approximately 3 p.m., you’ll be able to hear the ringing church bells all over the country—from Alaska to Washington—commemorating the final refrain of MLK’s speech, which says “let freedom ring,” according to the Associated Press.
In D.C., “numerous organizations and churches will ring their bells at 3 p.m., including the Smithsonian Institution on the National Mall.” According to a press release, the churches participating in the mass bell-ringing across the city will include the “historic Epiphany Episcopal Church located at Metro Center, as well as Georgetown University, and the D.C. Public High School “School Without Walls” (one of only 2 DC schools with a Bell Tower and a National Historic Landmark located at the Grant School in Foggy Bottom).”
The National Cathedral will also play hymns and spirituals, including “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” “We Shall Overcome,” and “My Country ’Tis of Thee.”
Freedom will probably ring out for only a couple minutes, then you should get back to work.
